The University of Louisville women’s basketball team has one regular-season game remaining – a game Monday at Syracuse. The Cardinals are currently tied for third in the Big East Conference. Here’s a look at a weekly notebook:

CARDS CAN STILL GET THIRD PLACE

With just two days of competition left in the Big East Conference, the University of Louisville women’s team can still claim third place in the league.

The No. 16 Cardinals (23-6, 11-4) will play the final regular-season game of the season in the league on Monday at Syracuse at 9 p.m. With a win the Cardinals will claim third-place in the league for the regular-season and get a double bye in next week’s Big East Conference Tournament.

A loss to the Orange (22-5, 10-4) and he Cardinals will need some help receiving the double bye – which goes to the top four seeds in the conference. Syracuse hosts Villanova on Saturday before hosting U of L on Monday.

St. John’s (16-10, 10-4) is also in the mix and hosts Seton Hall on Saturday and plays at DePaul on Monday. U of L holds the tiebreaker against St. John’s after a 57-54 victory on Jan. 27.

”We just need to win,” U of L coach Jeff Walz said.

REID HAS HIGH CAREER NUMBERS

Fifth-year senior Monique Reid celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday and had eight points and one rebound in the win over Seton Hall.

Reid will leave U of L as one of the school’s all-time leading scorers.

The former Fern Creek High School star now has career numbers of: 1,668 points, 777 rebounds, 121 assists and 140 steals.

Reid ranks fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list, just 69 points behind Kristin Mattox for fourth place. She is also four in career rebounds and is 73 behind Sharon Bellamy on the school’s rebounding list.

With her 133 career games, Reid ranks behind only Angel McCoughtry (139) and Keshia Hines (138) and Becky Burke (138) on that list.

SCHIMMEL MOVING UP CAREER LISTS

Junior guard Shoni Schimmel recently moved into the top spot on the school’s career three-pointer attempts list and is climbing some other lists.

Schimmel is currently No. 11 on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,365 career points and is just 33 points behind Janet McNew for 10th place. Angel McCoughtry is the all-time leader with 2,779 career points.

Schimmel is eighth on the school’s all-time assists list with 425 for her career and fourth for career three-pointer’s made with 245. She leads the school in all-time three’s attempted with 728.

A NEW PLAYER ON ROSTER

Walz said a week or so ago that he had added a new player to the roster – volleyball scholarship freshman Davionna Holmes.

The 6-foot-3 Holmes is from East St. Louis High School and averaged 14.4 points and 4.4 rebounds a game as a senior on the hardwood.

Holmes was added to get some size in practice.

”We were looking for some size,” Walz said, noting he would “see how things go,” before decided if she would play in a game.

CARDS WILL HOST NCAA TOURNAMENT

U of L will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament at the KFC Yum! Center. And the Cardinals will be playing in that bracket.

The event will be held March 24 and 26 at the Yum! Center.

”My goal is to get 10,000 into (the Yum! Center),” Walz said. “Right now, we’re playing to get into the tournament and then playing for seeding. Each game we win puts us another notch up there for seeding.”

Tickets for the first two rounds can be purchased through the www.NCAA.com website and at the Yum! Center ticket offices. All-session tickets for adults are $32 and $18 for youth/seniors and college students.
