Three members of the University of Louisville women’s basketball team will be in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Thursday night for the start of USA Basketball Women’s World University Games team trials. Shoni Schimmel, Bria Smith and Sara Hammond will all be competing for a spot on the 12-player roster.

After an amazing run during the season, three members of the University of Louisville women’s basketball team will be trying to keep the run of good fortune on the court going this weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Senior-to-be Shoni Schimmel and juniors Bria Smith and Sara Hammond will be competing for spots on the USA Basketball Women’s World University Games team. The trip will be among 33 players trying out for the team.

The three players will be vying for one of 12 spots on the team that will compete in the World University Games to be held July 8-15 in Kazan, Russia.

The trials begin on Thursday night with the team expected to be named on Monday morning.

Schimmel led the Cardinals with 14.2 points a game and also led the team with 136 assists while coming up with 65 steals on the season.

The 6-foot-1 Hammond averaged 10.8 points a game and led the team with 6.5 rebounds a game. She is a former Kentucky Miss Basketball from Rockcastle County High School and also had 52 steals.

Smith, who was switched to the point guard spot by coach Jeff Walz during the season, averaged 9.5 points and 4.3 rebounds and had 91 assists. Smith was also second on the team at blocked shots with 29.

The Cardinals finished the season 29-9 and lost to Connecticut in the NCAA national championship game. U of L upset Purdue, top-ranked and defending national champion Baylor, eight-time national champion Tennessee and California on its way to the title game.
