A former assistant with the Seattle Storm and now Lakeside and NW HoopGurlz, Chris Bown has made his mark with individual player development. His latest The Drill column is about a drill often used as a pre-game warmup to get up a lot of shots.

Texas Turnout

Requirements: Three balls, 5-7 players

This is a drill that I see used often as a warmup drill before games. A line of players start on either side of the basket on the baseline. The first player curves out to the other block and receives a pass from the player in the other line and shoots a shot. The passer goes around that player to the first player’s side for the shot and the drill continues for a specified number of shots with each player getting her own rebound and passing to the other line. The players continue while moving away from the basket towards the free throw line.

Some variations that I use while working with players is to have one line start at the block on the left side of the floor and the other start outside the elbow on the right side of the floor. One shot will be a post up on the block and the other will be a step-in jumper. Switch sides.

One line can start on the baseline at the three-point line while the other is on the same side of the floor about 25 feet out from the base line. You will get a corner jumper and an elbow jumper.

One line can start at the middle of the free throw lane out around the three-point line. The players can go over the top for the elbow jumper or under for the curl in jumper or a post up.

Note: On the drills that go to both sides of the floor you can have your players go to either side of the line to get different shots. On the drills that stay on the same side you generally can go one way.
