OREGON CITY, Ore., July 8, 2005 - The final day of the End of the Trail tournament was filled with intensity and great performances. The top prospects from 2007 squared off in the bracket playoff and brought their “A” games in a rematch of Tuesday night’s exhibition between the Georgia Metros and Spokane Stars.

Maya Moore and Angie Bjorklund were center stage in the rematch. In the game Tuesday night the Metros were able to limit Bjorklund, but the defense was so focused on Bjorklund that others were able to step up. Spokane won by 10 but couldn’t repeat Tuesday’s feat, losing to the Metros 78-67 today as Georgia moved on to play Boo Williams Summer league in the final.

In this contest, Bjorklund would not be denied, blowing up for 19 first-half points and finishing with 35 points, five rebounds and two steals. She did everything in her power offensively to keep her team in the game, but the Metros led by Moore’s 24 points were too much for the Stars. Moore started off slow, then exploded in the second half with 17 points. Her teammates picked up the scoring slack in the first half, led by the five three pointers made by 5-foot-9 guard Janae Stokes. This proved to be a scoring boost that could not be overcome by Spokane despite a late run that cut a Metros lead that was as large as 20.

Maya Moore
Maya Moore followed up her 24-point performance with 26 points in the championship game against Boo Williams. Moore had the crowd jumping up and down all game long with a host of athletic play and amazing catches, including one catch where she skied rim-high to make a one-handed catch on the run. Needless to say, she came down with the ball and converted it into two points. Her biggest shots of the game came in the final minutes where she hit back-to-back, three-point bombs to tie the game.

Also coming up big for the Metros was Ashley Houts. She scored 19 in the game. She had a great sequence where she stole the ball from the point, finished a lefty layin with contact then turned around the next possession, stole the ball again and hit a big three in transition to swing the momentum of the game. She also made some amazing plays and was fearless taking deep shots and attacking the basket.

The bigger front line of Georgia slowed down North Carolina commit Jessica Breland, but fellow UNC commit Monica Wright picked up the slack scoring 18 points, showcasing her great athleticism and ability to run the floor. The Boo Williams Summer League team also got some huge baskets from 2007 recruit Kimberly Rodgers. The 5-9 guard is a shooter, plain and simple. She hit back-to-back threes to end one of the Metro runs in the second half, one with a defender all over her. You’ll want to keep an eye on her. Bottom line is the deeper Boo Williams squad outlasted the final push of the Metros for a 63-58 championship victory in the National Division.
