Terrace Hawks Triumph in Thriller

Jessica Takara (15), defending Paige Halberg's entry pass, came up big down the stretch for the Hawks.
SEATTLE, July 20 - Like dessert, Jessica "J.T." Takara's offense came late, but was utterly satisfying for the Terrace Hawks.
Takara scored all nine of her points in the second half and hit three free throws during the final 35.5 seconds to snap a 39-all tie and propel the Hawks to a 42-39 victory over the Oregon Triple Threat.
The 8th Grade championship at KeyArena lived up to all pre-game expectations as a barn-burner.
Led by sharp-shooting Lauren McKnight, who had eight points by intermission, the Hawks controlled much of the opening half. Oregon's Mia Mason pounded the underbelly of the Hawk defense for nine of her game-high 13 points to keep Triple Threat close.
Stephanie West drained a baseline jumper at the halftime buzzer, then later drilled another to give the Hawks the biggest lead of the game, 35-28, with 10:09 to play. But, doing their damage with fullcourt pressure, Triple Threat came storming back, putting together a 10-2 run, that Becky Goll capped with a layup that grabbed Oregon a 39-37 lead with 2:03 left.
Lindsey Bordeaux tied the game for the Hawks with 43.9 seconds remaining, then Takara got her fouls shots off a pair of backcourt steals.
Terrace Hawks Roster: Lindsey Bordeaux, Lisa Coate, Nicky Froland, Tatiana Heck, Liz Horiatis, Nicki Mosman, Lauren McKnight, Lee-Ann Palo, Jessica Takara, Stephanie West, Coach Bill Mosman.
Oregon Triple Threat Roster: Kirah Aldinger-Gibson, Jordan Brown, Becky Goll, Paige Halberg, Miranda Holenstein, Amanda Huck, Simone Jordan, Lauren Joyce, Ali Lomax, Nia Mason, Kelsey Wood, Coach Eric Halberg.

Nia Mason was a force inside for Oregon Triple Threat.

Stephanie West (10) shows great form on a shot that beat the halftime buzzer.

Liz Horiatis of the Hawks gave Becky Goll, Jordan Brown (24), Miranda Holenstein (5) and the rest of the Triple Threat defense plenty to ponder.

High Impact Scrunches Y.E.S.

Mikayla Harshman (10) and an Impact teammate swarm Anna Martin of Y.E.S., as Alex Moore-Porter swoops in.
SEATTLE, July 20 - Opponents of a certain team from South Seattle and Renton have been advised to strap in and brace for the Impact. It can be a wild ride. Before you know it, after you've endured the swarming defenders and dizzying fast-break forays, it's over.
That had to be how Y.E.S. felt after Impact took a 49-24 victory in the 7th Grade championship game at KeyArena.
Shortly after Allie Urban supplied them with a 6-4 lead 2 minutes, 40 seconds into the game, Y.E.S. blinked and 10 minutes later found themselves in a desperate, 13-point hole. That's because the after-burners kicked in and Impact's jet-propelled point guard, Valencia Doty, scored 10 points during a 15-zip run for her team.
Doty, who led the day's scorers with 15 points, capped the blitz with a pair of three-point plays, each triggered by her own steals.
Lindsey Boles supplied a little Y.E.S. magic with a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer, but it wasn't long before Mikayla Harshman drained consecutive three-pointers to stake Impact to a 20-point lead early in the second half.
Impact Roster: Donjanique Baker, Nikki Coleman, Arianna Davis, Randi Dry, Valencia Doty, Mikayla Harshman, Danielle Jones, Katie Kirsch, Cassie Lord, Alexandra Moore-Porter, Demetria Riggins, Marquesha Weathersby, Coach Jonathan Smith.
Y.E.S. Roster: Lindsey Boles, Mo Costello, Demetria Gpinoza, Annie Hunter, Anna Martin, Carolyn Moore, Mary Padden, Alison Reiman, Katie Stdius, Allie Urban, Melissa Verilli, Coach Danielle Wegman.

Things looked promising for Y.E.S. when their great point guard, Carolyn Moore, scored off the opening tip.

After yielding a rare open shot, the disciplined Impact crash the boards.

Impact Coach Jonathan Smith (left) checks the clock to see if it's time to (finally) crack a smile; Coach Jay beats him to the punch.

Emerald City Takes First Title

The Magic's Gillian Pennington (51) and Emerald City's Lily Ranseyer (11) hustle for the ball as Katrina Carlson (11) and Christine Reisenier (3) look on.
SEATTLE, July 19 - They were a little short in numbers, but certainly not in stature. Nearly unstoppable inside, the Emerald City Basketball Academy took the first championship in Summer Storm history with a 38-19 victory over Magic 2008 in the Sixth Grade Division.
Andrea Holzberger scored a game-high 18 points to lead ECBA. She helped stake her team to a 7-4 lead with a putback midway through the first half, then had a pair of layups near intermission for a 20-8 Emerald lead.
Magic 2008, which was led by Rachael Williams' seven points, chipped their defict to just 26-15 early in the second half. However, Lily Ranseyer scored a three-point play and a two-footer in the lane to spark an Emerald City run that built the lead to 20.
Emerald City Basketball Academy Roster: Maggie Henley, Tianna Homad, Andrea Holzberger, Anna LaBellarte, Lily Ranseyer, Brittany Roland, Coach Keith Wasberg.
Magic 2008 Roster: Katrina Carlson, Olivia Kristof, Katie Kruger, Rachelle Montag, Monica Nevi, Mary Pennington, Mary Petrie, Christine Reisenier, Caitie Richards, Krista Simmonsen, Michaela Surdi, Rachael Williams, Coach Jamie Richards.

Katie Kruger (32) admires her work from the foul line (so does teammate Katrina Carlson).

ECBA's Anna LaBellarte defends an inbound from the Magic's Michaela Surdi (00).

Interior defense such as that by Andrea Holzberger (46) propelled Emerald City.

Heat Came to Im-Press

Converging defense, such as that applied to the Magic Dragons' Mirah Herd, propelled the Heat.
SEATTLE, July 20 - The previous weekend, it appeared that it was Madison Yakaboski who turned up the Heat. But the appearance may have disguised reality.
And reality is, the Heat has great talent beyond its speedy star.
With all five starters getting into the act, the Heat jumped on top of the Magic Dragons 9-0 en route to a 28-10 victory in the 5th Grade championship game at KeyArena.
Surely, the Magic Dragons dug in, using their fullcourt pressure, and shooting from Gillian St. John and Natalie Davis to close the gap. Davis' bucket with 16:20 to play brought the Magic Dragons dangerously close at 12-9.
But the Heat was able to lean on its own pressure defense and, of course, its star. During a frenetic, defense-fueled 14-0 run, Yakaboski collected nine of her game-high 13 points, plus a couple assists and a bushel of steals, to put the Heat up 27-9.
Impressively, the Heat defense yielded only five points each half.
Heat Roster: Marlayna Drawski, Emily Drivstuen, Trisha Moriarty, Kylin Munoz, Emily Ogaleto, Rachel Shaber, Alyssa Smith, Marissa Timmerman, Madison Yakaboski, Coach Rod Drivstuen, Coach Si Smith.
Magic Dragon Roster: Danika Coronaica, Natalie Davis, Tash Edwards, Mirah Herd, Kaitlin Kra, Shelby Marker, Tarah Martin, Montana Mensing, Jennifer Singh, Gillian St. John, Coach Klaus Herd.

The Magic Dragons' Shelby Marker (10) and the Heat's Madison Yakaboski await the official's call.
