In a game featuring numerous future Division I players, Forsyth Country Day of Lewisville, N.C., knocked off a major rival.
CARY, N.C. - Two of North Carolina’s best teams met Thursday night and provided what might be a preview of a final four game in the North Carolina Independent School 3A playoffs. It provided an exciting game and a great view of several Division1 recruits and potential recruits.
Top-ranked Forsyth Country Day (30-2) visited third ranked Cary Academy (22-4) on Cary’s Senior Night, and escaped with a 60-59 victory. Each of the talented seniors took turns controlling the game. First,
Brittany Carter
, a 6-footer who signed with Charlotte, showed her interior strength and defensive ability to lead FCD to a first quarter lead.
Cary Academy came back behind the all-court game of
Brittany Blackwell
, a UNC-Wilmington signee. The Chargers used Blackwell on the wing for to set up their offense; she used drives and pull up jumpers to help Cary to take a one-point halftime lead.
Bryelle Smith
, Cary Academy’s 5-8 point guard used her blazing speed and unlimited range to push the Charger’s lead to 12 point at the end of three quarters. But in the forth quarter, Carter and
Alena Voronina
, a 6-2 forward signed by Old Dominion, used their superior post moves to chip away at the lead. When Blackwell fouled out with 3:21 left in the game, FCD was able to gain the lead.
The game features some future players of note as well.
Margaret Harvey
, a 6-0 junior wing showed flashes of her potential and super-quick point guard Najet Quardad has a shot despite her diminutive 5-2 frame. And watch out for Dara Brown, a 6-0 sophomore from Cary Academy, who shows great potential for the future.
Carter led all scorers with 29 points while Voronina added 16. Blackwell led Cary Academy with 18 points; Bryelle Smith, a Clemson signee, chipped in with 15.
Harry Ball
is a former AAU coach and director for the Wake County Sting, in Raleigh, N.C.
