Club teammates Jasmine Dixon and Nikki Speed help their teams to California state championships.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -
Jasmine Dixon
and
Nikki Speed
already had a couple of things in common. They are teammates on the Finest Basketball Club (FBC) traveling team and both are considered among the very best college prospects in the 2008 class. Now they have another thing in common - a California state championship.
Dixon, a 6-foot-1 junior, had 23 points and 11 rebounds as Long Beach Poly beat Berkeley 58-52 at Arco Arena in a rematch of last year's Division I championship game.
Candice Nichols
, a University of Washington signee, scored 11 of her 17 points in the first half as the Jackrabbits (36-1) likely wrapped up a No. 2 ranking by Full Court Press. Collins Hill of Suwanee, Ga., finished an unbeaten season with a Georgia state title to nail down the No. 1 ranking two weeks ago.
Speed, a 5-9 point guard, scored 20 of her career-high 25 points in the second half as Marlborough (27-6) rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat Vallejo St. Patrick-St. Vincent 67-52 in the Division IV championship game. Speed offset a 32-point performance by
Alex Cowling
, who has committed to Loyola Marymount.
Danielle Robinson
, an Oklahoma signee, had 22 points and eight rebounds as Archbishop Mitty of San Jose (31-4) scored an upset, 54-49 victory over Brea-Olinda. Led by the 21 points and 11 rebounds of Stanford-bound
Jeanette Pohlen
, Brea-Olinda (33-2) was ranked No. 7 nationally by Fullcourt Press.
Another top prospect,
Tierra Rogers
, led Sacred Heart Cathedral (32-2) of San Francisco to a 60-54 victory over Bishiop Amat in the Division III championship game.
Dixon is the No. 4 overall prospect in the 2008 class, according to HoopGurlz.com, while Speed is No. 13.
