"The Pit" to Host T-Mobile

Posted Mar 28, 2007

The second annual T-Mobile Invitational, featuring four of the nation's top high-school teams, will be held in Albuquerque, N.M., this year.

The second annual T-Mobile Invitational will take place at "The Pit" on the campus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

The tournament, set for Dec. 28-29, will showcase four of nation's top four girl's high-school basketball teams (and four boys), determined in part through USA Today's "Super 25" rankings.

Also sponsored by the National Federataion of State High School Associations (NFHS), the T-Mobile will feature only NFHS-member schools. Collins Hill of Suwanee, Ga., won the inaugural event in Seattle, Wash., that also included Issaquah (Wash.), St. Elizabeth of Wilmington, Del., and Winter Haven (Fla.).

"Last year's event was better than we could have imagined, "said Robert F. Kanaby, NFHS executive director. "This is the first basketball tournament the NFHS has ever sponsored and joins our other national educational initiatives to help communicate the important role that activity programs play in high school education."

New Mexico will be represented by the Gallup High School girl's team, which won the state's 5A title in 2006 and finished 19-8 this past season. The other three girl's teams will be top-ranked teams from across the country. The other schools, plus first-round matchups, will be announced at a later date.

"We're delighted to bring the T-Mobile Invitational to New Mexico in 2007," said Mike Belcher, director of sponsorships and entertainment marketing, T-Mobile USA. "T-Mobile firmly believes in the positive benefits of interscholastic sports and activities and we're proud to showcase some of the top talent in the nation in front of some of the best basketball fans in the country."
