Amber Gray of West Chester, Ohio, gives her verbal commitment to Pat Summitt and the Tennessee Lady Vols.

The 2007 National Champion Tennessee Lady Vols have wasted no time building their dynasty for the future. On the heels not only of the national championship but also the No. 1 recruiting class in the country Coach Summitt locked up one of the most versatile players in the 2008 class in Amber Gray this week when she verbally committed to Tennessee.

Gray, the No. 15 ranked player in the 2008 class is a very smooth and athletic forward who is capable of playing in both the frontcourt and backcourt at the high school level and based on her discussions with the Tennessee coaches she’s looking at playing multiple positions at the Rocky Top too. Offensively she pencils in at either forward position as she has a nice face up game and is very strong and crafty around the basket. On the defensive end she needs to continue to improve and be more aggressive so that she can defend any of the positions she’s asked to.

“(Tennessee) is where (Gray) felt most comfortable,” said her father Carlton Gray. “She took her unofficial visit in October during football season. She saw how well (the 2007 team) gets along and how well they are treated on campus.”

Also contributing to the decision was the recent shake up in the coaching ranks as two of her top five schools, Duke, LSU, Maryland, Ohio State and Tennessee, have had changes at the top with Duke’s Coach Goestenkor’s leaving for Texas and assistant Tia Jackson going to Washington as well as the Pokey Chapman debacle at LSU. Those changes allowed Gray to re-evalute her options with more decisiveness.

Her father added that like many girls growing up, Amber dreamed of playing for the prestigious Lady Vols program. Gray will play this spring and summer with Cincinnati’s Finest and will be at the Deep South Classic for the spring evaluation period where she hopes to add to the team’s success and help her teammates get recognition and exposure as well.
