Report from Atlanta - Part II

Posted May 2, 2007

Our report on the inaugural Nike Regional Skills Academy, held in Atlanta, Ga., continues with more 2008 prospects, plus the standout underclassmen.

ATLANTA - The first-ever Nike Regional Skills Academy was held at Atlanta's St. Pius X High School over the weekend of April 20-22, 2007. It was attended by 28 of the top players in the South (as far west as Texas, and as far north as Tennessee and Arkansas).

Yesterday, we presented several of the standouts from the class of 2008, in alphabetical order. Today, we finish out the '08s and present the underclassmen.

(Editor's Note: Krista Gross erroneously was slotted in the 2008 class and appears again here in her correct class - 2009).

Taylor Turnbow - 6-3 - Tucker H.S, Ga. - Georgia Metros
Turnbow was one of the most mobile and athletic post players in the NRSA, getting more blocked shots and deflections, on both driving guards and physical post players, than any other post player. She runs the floor like a guard, plays hard on both ends of the floor, is quick and strong enough to defend a tall, athletic perimeter player, and in one game she led all players in both blocks and points.
Candace Wood - 5-11 - Victory Christian HS, N.C. - Tenn. Flight
Wood, a UNC commit, showed the deadly-accurate outside shooting from beyond the arc and quick release that make her the kind of momentum changer that Coach Sylvia Hatchell likes, and one that all opponents have to know where she is all of the time. She has good handles and passes well, so she can find the open player. She hustles on defense, and can handle the pressure on offense.
Jasmine Wynn - 5-8 - University Christian HS, Fla. - Essence
Wynn is a quick guard who slips by a lot of defenders. She has good court vision, and plays aggressively on both ends. She makes good decisions in the flow of the game, and can lead the break. She handles ball pressure well, and is a team player. Look for her stock to continue to rise this summer.

Krista Gross - 6-0 - Cannon HS, N.C. - Tennessee Flight
Gross is a very good shooter, with a lot of range. She is both athletic and physical, which make a deadly combination in an attacking guard of her size. She also can rebound with the bigs. A scrappy player with lots of energy on the court, she often causes momentum changes in the flow of the game with her hustle plays.
Morgan Stroman - 6-1 - Lower Richland HS, S.C. - Ga/Lina 76'ers
A physically strong and athletically-gifted forward, Stroman showed power moves in the post, and runs the floor like a guard. She plays aggressive defense, and her stamina and toughness came out in the drills and the games. She should have a good summer and move up on many recruiting lists.
Morgan Toles - 5-9 - St. Pius X HS, Ga. - Georgia Metros
Toles has amazing quickness, an extra gear when it comes to pure speed, and almost never turns the ball over. She consistently sets up her teammates for open shots - probably the leading assists-maker in the NRSA, and she made very aggressive drives and scored off her pull-up jumper, runners, and at the hoop with athletic finishes. Her stamina, toughness, dribbling and ballhandling stood out in the drills.

Lauren Avant - 5-8 - Lausanne Collegiate HS, Tenn. - Tenn. Flight
Avant has excellent court vision, runs the break like a more experienced player, makes accurate passes on the move, and can score herself. She looked good with players two years her senior, and she will only get better playing for the well-coached Tennessee Flight.
Kaneisha Horn - 6-1 - Ramsey HS, Ala. - Alabama Roadrunners
Horn and Avant were the only freshman invited to play. She held her own with the older post players, and has strong moves inside, plus a nice touch on her shot around the basket. She should continue to improve this summer and will get more and more attention.

Cassie Peoples - 5-5 - Middle School, Fla. - Orlando Comets
The only eighth grader invited among this strong group of very talented high school players, Peoples handled herself well, and was poised as she ran the point like a player of more experience. Sees the court well, and can finish around the basket.
