Top 5 Memorable Moments in Lakeland
1. In the Class 6A State Semi-Final Edgewater was down 2 to Lake Mary with 20 seconds remaining in regulation before Kalyn Dinkins hit a 3 point field goal and was fouled to go up 2. Lake Mary’s Morgan Jones was fouled on the ensuing play with 6.5 seconds remaining. Jones airballed the first free throw and missed the second. Edgewater only had to inbound the ball and hold it for 6.5 seconds because Lake Mary was 5 fouls away from getting in the 1 and 1. Alexis Prince got the ball and on her attempt to pass it to advance it for the final play it was stolen by Shakeiya Coyler and Lake Mary eventually won in double overtime.
2. First Championships; Lake Howell; Norland; Community School; and Lake Worth Christian all won their first state championship.
3. After a phantom foul with less then 3 seconds remaining in the Class 5A Semi-Final Game which caused Nova to win the game Boca Ciega Coach Will White refused the media information to FHSAA media director Cristina Alvarez and she looked the most flustered out of anyone at the tournament all weekend. Alvarez was so flustered she ran straight to FHSAA high up Denarvis Thornton. I think anyone at the event will criticize how poorly it was run. $9 per session and a $99.00 tournament pass, poor officiating; poor crowds, and the worst arena in the state all so the FHSAA can make a buck. It was sad to see the officials play such an integral role in this year’s final four. Each year there are the same complaints and each year they fall upon deaf ears.
4. Bishop Moore has had a run of 5 consecutive final fours, five division one players over the past 5 years, three different coaches, and has only come away with one championship. Personally, this year’s loss to Astronaut I feel was because of injury problems but for that much talent and instability in the program one would think in the end the kids would deserve more. Look for Bishop Moore to be a different team and program next year, Camille Crooks will take them as far as she can but an era has passed on Edgewater Drive.
5. The future was bright with Niya Johnson (Pk Yonge) and Alexis Prince (Edgewater) making and staring in their first final four. Will either of these young ladies be able to will their team to victory in the future? We will see.
