An assistant with the Seattle Storm and Lakeside, Chris Bown has made his mark with individual player development. His latest column on drills is about Oiler three-point shooting, the third of four parts on drills from Charlie Sands of Los Angeles.

Oiler Three-Point Shooting
Requirements: Five to 12 players and two balls.

Player 1 starts on the right wing outside the three-point line. Player 2 starts on the baseline under the basket. Player 3 and 4 have balls and start the line at the top of the key, straight away. Player 2 breaks out to the left wing and squares up to receive the pass. She turns and faces the basket, executes a shot fake, takes one penetrating dribble to the paint, passes to Player 1 and follows behind one to become the next shooter. Upon receiving the pass, Player 1 shoots the three-point shot, retrieves her rebound and passes to Player 5 in line. Once Player 3 passes to Player 2, she sprints to the end line under the basket and plants her right foot on the end line, pivots and sprints to the left wing.

Once all players have gone through at this spot once, have the player who is passing to the shooter execute two penetrating dribbles, pass to the shooter and close out on the shooter with a hand up.

Change the location and angles of the shooter:
  • Have passer start in corner opposite shooter with shooter on wing.
  • Have passer start on wing and pass to shooter in opposite corner.

Note: This is the second of four parts on drills that were given to me and a few other coaches by Charlie Sands, the head basketball coach at West Los Angeles College. Last week's were the Basic Four shooting drill.
