Spring Fling II is one of the top non-viewing period events in the state of Florida. The AAU and Disney-run event usually draws in teams from all over Florida and this year’s tournament had more than 100 battling for the title of champion and to qualify for AAU Nationals in different age groups .

Super 6 Teams (No Order)

Jacksonville Lady Rams: The Rams beat every team in the event by 20 or more points. The Rams are led by 2011 guard Loliya Briggs (5’10’’ G 2011 Potters House Christian) who has established herself as the top player on the team. The Rams' run and jump gives teams fits all over Florida and they have not lost to a Florida team in recent memory.

FGB Junior Elite: FGB got a bad draw, ending up in the same pool as the Jacksonville Lady Rams. FGB only had a 10-point deficit at half time but fell 61-37 in pool play. Shawn Randall played well at point this weekend for FGB. FGB ran through the South Florida Pressure and Trojans before holding a double digit lead versus DEBO in a quarterfinal loss 47-41. Latavia Dempsey (5’7’’ G 2010 Boca Ciega) scored 20 of her 25 points in the first half versus DEBO.

DEBO Elite: DEBO fell to the Rams in the final by 21 points (68-47). Morgan Jones (2011 6’1’’ G/F Lake Mary) is one of the most difficult players to match up with in the event, standing 6’1’’ and can play inside and outside. DEBO had stellar inside play from Katherine Zander (6’3’’ C Orange Park 2011) and Meme Ward (6’2’’ F Winter Haven 2010).

South Florida Jaguars: South Florida added Kasie Parker (5’9’’ G 2010 Lake Howell) who basically beat the Comets in the semi-finals by herself. Parker along with Carissa Coddington (5’10’’ PG 2011 Nova) are the two main players for a good South Florida team.

Orlando Comets Red: The Comets are a shell of what they once were. The Comets were beaten in the first round of bracket play by South Florida. The Comets are led at point by Yachira Delgado (5’5’’’ PG 2010 Poinciana) who has little help in the backcourt. A stellar front court was weakened when Amber Henson (6’3’’ F Sickles 2011) broke her wrist a week ago.

Georgia Ice: It would have been interesting to see the Ice play in the top division but without Diamond DeSheilds (6’1’’ G/F 2013 Norcross, GA) they were not at full strength all weekend. With DeSheilds out, the Ice still rolled through the 14U Division, dismantling the Orlando Comets 14U, a team which many believed to be the top 14U team in Florida. Kaela Davis (6’2’’ G 2013 Norcross, GA) was probably the best prospect in the entire event.

Notes: The Brevard Lady Bulls played without their top two players most of the weekend with Brianna Sims (6’0’’ G Mainland 2010) being a no show and Deaundra Young (6’2’’ F Astronaut 2010) being gone on Friday and Saturday. The Bulls, again as at Boo Williams, dodged the top teams, opting to play in and blasting the lower 16U Division of the tournament. The Orlando Comets Blue added Colette Eule from FGB Junior Elite but still struggled, unable to win a game in the event. The Orlando Comets 15U beat the Lakeland Cavaliers in the semi’s of a weaker 16U Division before falling to the Wellington Wolves in the finals. The Orlando Comets 15U were led by Briona Brown (5’10’’ F Haines City 2010) who carries the team. The PC Ballers were the favorite of the division which Wellington won but were upset by the Wolves in the semi-finals. The Ballers struggled all weekend with a beat up Jerica Coley (5’7’’2010 PG ST Pete Catholic). FGB Sophomore Elite Red struggled to finish games losing to the Wildcats by 12 and 4 over the weekend and the Florida Storm by 10. FGB was banged up with Brielle Newton (6’1’’ F 2011 Clearwater) injuring her shoulder and Monique Bunk (5’5’’ PG 2011 CFP) suffering a concussion in the semi-final loss to the Wildcats. 6’3’’ sophomore forward Emmalee Schill (St Augustine) had a breakout weekend for FGB. The Orlando Comets 14U struggled big time with a banged up Georgia Ice team who played without Diamond DeSheilds (6’1’’ G/F Norcross 2013). The Ice had doubled up the Comets most of the game before they put on a late run. Morgan Robinson (5’9’’ G/F Lyman 2012) is one of the top freshmen in Florida but did not get much burn as the Comets were beaten by the Ice. Florida Wildcats played two tough games against FGB Sophomore Elite Red but was upset in the finals by the Florida Storm. Camille Crooks came back from and injury which helped them significantly.

Class of 2010

Moving Up the Charts

Yachira Delgado 5’5’’ PG Poinciana – Delgado was a relative unknown and is playing on a team which struggles to feature her style of play. Delgado is a great transition player and plays in more of a half court system. Look for Delgado to get some mid-level college attention in the right setting this summer.

Latavia Dempsey 5’7’’ G Boca Ciega – Some have Dempsey in the top 100 in the country already, by the end of the summer it should be a consensus. Dempsey can score from all 3 levels, the basket, mid range, and deep ball and will be a major get for one of the schools who are recruiting her.

Jerica Coley 5’8’’ PG St. Pete Catholic – Rumor has only one Division I school recruiting Coley but she is definitely in the elite class of point guard in the state of Florida. Look for Coley to breakout in the right setting this summer and turn the heads of a good number of college coaches. Coley is great at going to the basket. If she adds more range and the ability to finish with her left, she could be a national level prospect.

Kim Smith 5’9’’ SG East Ridge – Kim Smith is a great defender and athlete who can also shoot the ball. Smith is getting interest from a wide spectrum of schools all the way from the BCS schools to the Atlantic Sun. Once Smith is able to showcase herself in the summer evaluation period, it will be more clear what level she will play in college.

Ronisha Mitchell 5’5’’ Wildwood – Mitchell had a strong weekend in Atlanta which secured herself a Division I scholarship. Mitchell has done a great job protecting the ball and beating defenders off the dribble. Mitchell is super quick and will make a college coach very happy in the fall of 2010.

2011 Moving Up the Charts

Emmalee Schill 6’3’’ F St Augustine – Schill is a long athlete who can shoot the ball and can take it off the dribble. Schill also is a great on ball defender who’s length is definitely is an asset.

Katherine Zander 6’4’’ F/C Orange Park – Zander played well especially on the defensive end this weekend. As Zander adds more skill, look for her stock to continue to rise.

Alexis Brown 5’8’’ G Ribault – Brown is somewhat overshadowed by the elite level guards on the Rams but is one of the strongest and toughest guards on their team. Look for Brown to get major looks in 2011.

Carissa Coddington 5’10’’ G Nova – Coddington has a slim frame but is very quick and a great on ball defender. Coddington needs to shoot it better and once she begins to play in a setting with better players, she should begin to get major looks.

Laurie Beaty 5’8’’ G Jefferson – One of the best overall scorers in the event has gotten interest from Baylor among others after the evaluation weekend. Beaty, like few others, can score at all 3 levels and should continue to get interest from the BCS.

Christi Lane 5’7’’ SG Titusville – Hit 13 3’s in 2 games this weekend and is one of the most underrated shooters around. While Lane hasn’t established herself as a big time recruit, players who can shoot the ball often get interest from a good number of schools.

2012 Moving Up the Charts

Joy Brown 5’9’’ G/F Evans – Brown is one of the strongest and most athletic players in the class of 2012 in Florida. If Brown is ever able to get a stage to showcase her ability, then she could end up going big time.

Angela Alvarez 5’9’’ G St. Andrews – Alvarez has been a favorite since we saw her in 8th grade. Alvarez has added some size and bulk to her body and is great going to the basket. If Alvarez adds some outside game, she could end up going to the majors.

Shaquita Snow 5’5’’ PG Colonial – Snow is a super athletic point guard who can also shoot the ball. Snow plays on a small club team so may not get seen this year but look for her to develop into a big time point guard as time progresses.

Simiah Blount 5’9’’ G West Orange – Blount is a good shooter who also can take the ball to the basket. Blounts length and athletic ability may secure her a spot in Division I. Look for her development over the next year to determine her spot in the recruiting pecking order.

Shayla Wilson 6’1’’ F Jefferson – Although Wilson has switched teams twice this year already, her talent is undeniable. Wilson’s strong frame and guard skills at 6’1’’ could easily get her into the BCS in 2012.

2012 All Tournament Team

MVP – Antoinette Bannister – Jacksonville Lady Rams

Briona Brown – Orlando Comets 15U

Camille Crooks – Florida Wildcats

Kierra Taylor – Jacksonville Tarheels

Class of 2013

2013 Moving Up the Charts

Tiannah Alvarado 5’9’’ G Lakewood – Alvarado is a skilled athlete who can do it all on both ends of the floor. As she gets more exposure, look for her to break out as one of the top 2013 players in the south.

Alexis Brown 5’7’’ G Dr. Phillips – Brown is already pretty highly regarded but was snubbed by the NRSA people. Brown is a great shooter who has a high basketball IQ and can do it all from the point guard spot.

MVP- Kaela Davis – Georgia Ice

Iesha Smalls – South Florida Jags 13U

Erica Young – Lakeland Cavaliers

Jessica Thomas – Gainesville Warriors
