Florida did battle several times this spring and we take this opportunity to give credit to some of the most outstanding players in the Sunshine State as well as some players who had break out performances this spring.

Top 5 Teams

1. Team Breakdown – Breakdown’s only loss in Florida was to FGB and they finished 4th in the top bracket at the Deep South Classic.

2. Jacksonville Lady Rams – Struggled early at Deep South but rolled through Florida defeating everyone in their path at Spring Fling and AAU State.

3. DEBO – Finished 4th at the FGB Spring Showcase, 2nd at Spring Fling, but struggled at Deep South.

4. FGB Junior Elite – Won the FGB Spring Showcase, Finished 4th at the Peach State Tip Off Classic, 5th at AAU State, and 5th at Spring Fling II>

5. South Florida Jaguars – Two major wins over Southeast Elite and the Orlando Comets break them into the top 5. The Jags finished 3rd at Spring Fling.

Honorable Mention: Brevard Lady Bulls, Orlando Comets Red, PC Ballers.

**Essence was not ranked because they did not compete against any Florida teams.

Player of the Spring: Loliya Briggs 5’9’’ G Potters House Christian Jacksonville Lady Rams – Briggs is rumored to be attending Eastside High School next year as it was listed in the Deep South packet. Briggs was invited to the U16 tryouts in Colorardo Springs and was one of the top players in Southeast Nike Skills Academies. Briggs’s performance this spring has propelled her into the top 20 nationally in her class.

Florida Breakout Player of the Spring : Dawnn Maye 5’7’’ PG Dillard – Team Breakdown

2010 Spring MVP: Latavia Dempsey 5’7’’ G Boca Ciega – No one did more for their recruiting then Dempsey who is getting attention from every major conference east of the Mississippi. Dempsey’s scoring ability has propelled her into the top 100 nationally.

Runner Up Candidates: Jassany Williams – Nova; Jerica Coley – St. Pete Catholic; Alysa Baron – Gulliver Prep

2010 Breakout Player: Yashira Delgado 5’5’’ PG Orlando, Fl (School TBA) – Delgado came into the spring as a relative unknown but may be the most polished point guard in Florida besides Dawnn Maye. Delgado is getting recruited in the Sunbelt and Conference USA look for her stock to climb through the summer.

2011 Spring MVP: Kayla Brewer 6’2’’ F Jacksonville Ribault – Brewer left the swoosh in the spring to join the Georgia Blazers and it did no damage to her stock. Brewer has been invited to the U16 USA Basketball trails and had a strong spring exposure event. Look for Brewer to be a near lock for the McDonald’s Game in the class of 2011.

Runner Up Candidates: Brianna Wright – Titusville; Laurie Beaty – Jefferson; Morgan Jones – Lake Mary

2011 Breakout Player: Carissa Coddington 5’9’’ G Nova – South Florida Jaguars – Coddington was just a baby playing the point on an older AAU team last year but has become the main assassin on a team who lost Jassany Williams and Alysa Baron this year. Coddington will begin to get national recognition in the media and recruiting as this summer plays out.

2012 Spring MVP: Shavontae Naylor 5’9’’ G Ocala Forest – Naylor would have been the breakout winner if she had not just carried FGB Sophomore Elite. Naylor scored 23 points versus Southeast Elite in the spring and singled handedly beat the Orlando Comets Red and Orlando’s Finest on the way to finishing 2nd at the AAU State tournament. Naylor will be headed to Atlanta in the fall and will be a major addition to someone’s high school and travel basketball team.

Runner Up Candidates: Camille Crooks – Bishop Moore; Antoinette Bannister – Potters House Christian

2012 Breakout Player – Brittany Jackson 5’9’’ G Sebastian River – Jackson is a do it all guard who carried the Florida Lady Bulls this spring. Once Jackson is able to get on a big time Florida team she will shine in the main stage spotlight of teams who play in the elite divisions of tournaments. Until she is able to get on with one of those teams she will just be a local legend. Jackson has already made a believer out of this writer, now she just has to prove it to the rest of the world.

2013 Spring MVP: Alexis Brown 5’8’’ PG Dr. Phillips HS (Orlando, Fl) – Brown did not play in Florida this spring but was a part of the biggest break out team possibly in club basketball history. Brown is a do it all guard from Orlando who has taken over the reigns at point guard for the top young team in the country, Georgia Ice. Look for Brown to develop in to the elite point guard in the South in the class of 2013. It was a shame she was not invited to the Nike Skills Academy

Runner Up Candidates: Tiannah Alvarado – Lakewood; Casey Drayton – Lakewood; Halee Davis – Dr. Phillips

2013 Breakout Player – Jacoy Hutto 6’2’’ F Orlando, Fl (School TBA) – I saw Hutto this weekend and she is as long as the day and super athletic. Hutto plays in the paint right now but has the athletic ability to develop into a big time wing or be able to play inside and outside. If she gets the proper development and exposure she could end up being the top player in Florida in 2013.
